Rich, layered colour

Styling and renovation extraordinaire Kara Demmrich is one half of dynamic, down-to-earth duo and The Block favourites, Kyal & Kara. With over 35 renovations and design projects under their belt, this team knows a thing or two about making homes more beautiful. Kara joins us as our style ambassador and guest blogger.

Embrace colour to the max this season, with a scheme that makes a bright, bold statement to create a room with a rich, decadent ambience.

The secret to using big colours is to maintain control by layering tones of the same or similar hues across the room, and you can include furniture, accessories, artwork and the walls themselves.

Applying layered colour allows you to be as bold as you like by adding colour in stages. To achieve the look, start out with a key piece of furniture in a statement colour. This will inspire your overall palette of variations to use throughout the room.

For example, a blush pink armchair may be your starting point. With this in mind, paint the walls in a variation of the blush colour and find bedding and a throw in a similar shade, to create a sophisticated look that sets a mood for the room.

This theming is great in bedrooms and especially works well using dark and moody tones such as purples, deep blues, dusky greens, and the jewel tones of emeralds, ruby and amethyst.

Keep in mind that darker shades tend to make a space look smaller and more intimate, while lighter colours will open it up and make it feel more airy. Both can really transform a room and give it a whole new feel.

Here are some of our favourite ways to achieve success with layered colour.

Lay it on with colour
